Kid Command Center

& DIY Desk

With school back in session, this mama needed to get organized fast! We spent a whole day going through old clothes and toys, and threw away almost 8 bags of stuff ( If you don’t believe me, check out the video below!). I think its safe to say my boys have enough. (Insert eyeroll)

With my own practice of simplifying, I want to teach the kids the same. Less is more. Sure enough, they have been enjoying their room so much more lately.

One of the reasons we wanted to clear some space was for a desk area that the boys could do homework, and with that a command center that would help them (and me), be more organized.

I’ve been searching Pinterest for some ideas on kid command centers and haven’t found much. I did find a lot of desk ideas though! You can check out my Pinterest board on kid desk areas here.

I also needed it to be budget friendly. I think I accomplished that. This whole project was very affordable and one of the easiest DIY’s to date!

To create the desk,  hang three to four wooden shelf brackets. We had our kids sit in the stools and measured the perfect height for their desk. I wanted it to be comfortable for their current height and also be easily adjusted as they get older.

We hung the brackets on studs. You can also use wall anchors like these.

Then add the board to the top and attach using smaller screws.

You can seal your desk with paint, or did what we did and use wax! This is my favorite sealing wax!

Next, hang all your wall organization items. TIP: You can lay them out on the floor first to get an idea of what looks best!

We also printed some chore charts to keep us motivated year round. You can download this one here!

We have officially made it through our first week of school. Many days of homework to come and I think we just might make it! 😉

Have you see my boys room when we first redid it?! I hand painted the Swiss cross wall. If you’re looking for an easy way to add some texture to a room this is easy and cost effective.
