Gallery Walls can be super intimidating! So many frames, different sizes and shapes, so many nails and holes in a wall. If you’re anything like me, measuring the wall 50 times to get everything perfect is not something you have the patience for.
Well, the answer is simple. Butcher paper. You can purchase painters butcher paper for $10 at Home Depot or Lowes. You can find it in the painting section by the gloves, towels, and stains.
You want the butcher paper to be the width of your gallery wall, so measure the space first, and then create a canvas with your butcher paper. You can tape the paper together. It doesn’t need to look pretty, just try and make sure its straight to make leveling easier.
Next lay your frames out on the floor over the butcher paper canvas. This is the part where you get creative and try different layouts. making sure everything fits and is exactly how you want it. I wanted mine evenly spaced on top and bottom, so I measured each one exactly.
Once you have your layout finished, take a pen or marker and trace your frames (or object) that you are hanging. After you trace each item, remove each one, one at a time. As you remove the frame or object, look for the area you plan on using a nail. For frames, you have some kind of bracket to hang the nail. Measure that and then mark where the nail would be on the butcher paper.
Since I did a gallery wall of all the same frames this part was fairly easy. Each frame had the same nail spot, so I just drew it at the same spot on each one.
Next Tape your canvas to the wall, step back and make sure you like the layout. You will also want to level the paper and make sure its centered on the wall. Next, using a hammer or screw driver, nail, or screw straight into the wall on top of the canvas.
Once you’ve secured everything, you can hang the objects and make sure everything looks right. After you’re sure you love it, remove the items and rip the paper off the walls.
Hang all of your items and wah-la! You have a beautiful gallery wall.
